How this calculator works
Tumblers look like a high-margin product until you count the spoilage. A ghosted print or a scorched wrap does not cost you a sheet of paper — it costs the blank, the transfer, the press cycle, and the time, and blanks are the most expensive thing on the bench.
Press throughput is the other trap. Most presses take one or two tumblers per cycle, so machine time scales almost linearly with quantity instead of spreading like it does on a flat-bed laser.
The formula
- Blanks and transfers = quantity × cost ÷ (1 − that line’s waste %)
- Labour = Σ (stage minutes ÷ 60 × stage rate), with design and setup charged once per job
- Press cycles = ⌈ quantity ÷ tumblers per cycle ⌉, rounded up to whole cycles
- Spoilage allowance = (materials + press + hands-on labour) ÷ (1 − spoilage %) − those costs
- Price = (cost per tumbler + fixed fee ÷ quantity) ÷ (1 − target margin − fee %)
What to watch for
- Spoilage is charged against blanks, transfers, press time and hands-on labour together, because redoing a ruined tumbler consumes all four. Applying it to the transfer alone understates the real cost by a wide margin.
- Press throughput is usually one or two tumblers per cycle. Unlike a flat laser bed, press time therefore barely spreads across a larger order — which is why tumbler prices fall less with volume than makers expect.
- Transfer waste is normally higher than blank waste. Misprints, weeding errors and offcuts add up, and sublimation paper is consumed whether the print lands or not.
- Design and setup are charged once per job, so a single personalised tumbler carries the whole of both. That is why a one-off costs several times more per unit than a set of twelve.
- A vinyl tumbler has no press cycle but much more weeding time. Set the press cost to zero and move the minutes into prep rather than leaving both in.
Common mistakes
- Setting spoilage to zero. On stainless sublimation it is rarely below 5%.
- Assuming press time spreads across the order the way laser time does.
- Counting only the transfer cost for a ruined tumbler, not the blank it was on.
- Forgetting heat tape, shrink wrap and lint-free wipes, which are consumed on every unit.
- Pricing a one-off the same as a unit from a batch of twelve.
- Leaving packaging out on a fragile item that needs real protection to ship.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge for a custom tumbler?
Work up from the true cost rather than from a market price. A $9.50 blank with a transfer, supplies, spoilage, design and setup time, a press cycle, packaging and overhead typically lands well above what the blank alone suggests — commonly two to three times it at a 40% margin on a small order. Enter your own numbers, because blank cost and spoilage vary enormously by supplier.
What spoilage rate should I use for sublimation tumblers?
Most makers doing sublimation on stainless see somewhere between 5% and 10% once ghosting, scorching, misalignment and pressure marks are counted. If you have never measured it, start at 6% and adjust from your own scrap over a few dozen units. Vinyl work is usually lower, around 2–4%.
Why does the price barely drop on larger tumbler orders?
Because press throughput does not improve with volume. If your press takes one tumbler per nine-minute cycle, a hundred tumblers is a hundred cycles. Only design and setup spread across the order, so the per-unit saving is much smaller than it would be for a product where the machine bed holds twenty at a time.
Should I charge more for personalised names and dates?
Yes. Every personalised piece needs its own file, its own alignment and its own press cycle, so none of the setup spreads. Many shops add a per-name personalisation fee, or set a higher minimum for one-off customs, rather than absorbing the difference.
How do I price a tumbler where the customer supplies the blank?
