We want these tools to be usable by every maker, including those using a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or a device with a small screen. We target WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
What we have built in
Every control is reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus indicator that is never removed. Every input has a programmatically associated label, and validation messages are linked to the field they describe.
Results update in a polite live region that announces the headline figure only — announcing every metric on each keystroke would make a screen reader unusable.
Warnings and errors are conveyed by text and an icon as well as colour, so meaning does not depend on hue. Touch targets meet the 24-by-24 pixel minimum. Charts and cost bars carry text alternatives describing the same information.
The site respects your operating system’s reduced-motion and colour-scheme preferences, and works at 320 pixels wide and at 200% zoom without horizontal scrolling.
How we test
Automated accessibility checks run in our build pipeline against every page, and we review keyboard navigation and screen-reader output manually on the calculator pages, which are the most interactive part of the site.
Known limitations
Long numeric comparison tables inside our guides scroll horizontally within their own container on very narrow screens. The page itself does not scroll sideways, but reading a wide table on a small phone still takes more effort than we would like.
