How this calculator works

DTF is priced by area because that is what it costs by: film, ink and adhesive powder all scale with the square inches printed, which is why the trade sells gang sheets by size rather than by design.

The formula

  1. Consumables = quantity × square inches × (film + ink + powder cost per sq in)
  2. Film adjusted for waste: ÷ (1 − film waste %)
  3. Sheets = ⌈ quantity ÷ transfers per sheet ⌉
  4. Machine time = sheets × (print minutes + cure minutes)

What to watch for

  • Everything scales with area, which is why the trade quotes gang sheets by size rather than by design count. Doubling the transfer size roughly doubles the film, ink and powder.
  • The white underbase is the largest ink consumer in DTF — often more than all the colour channels combined. Cost your ink from actual usage rather than a colour-only estimate.
  • Film waste of 10% to 15% is normal once sheet margins, spacing between designs and roll leaders are counted.
  • White-ink circulation runs whether or not you are printing. That idle maintenance belongs in the machine rate, not treated as free.

  • Costing ink without the white underbase, which understates it substantially.
  • Pricing per transfer regardless of size when every consumable scales with area.
  • Ignoring film waste from sheet margins and spacing.
  • Leaving white-ink circulation out of the machine rate.

How much does a DTF transfer cost to make?

For a 40 square inch chest print, film, ink and powder typically come to around $0.80 to $1.00 in consumables. Once printer time, cure, artwork, handling, spoilage and overhead are added, a realistic cost is $1.50 to $2.50 depending on run length — which is why transfers commonly sell around $3 to $5.

Should I price DTF by size or by design?

By size. Film, ink and powder all scale with the printed area, so a design twice as large costs roughly twice as much to produce regardless of how complex it is. This is precisely why gang sheets are sold by dimensions rather than by how many designs you fit on them.

How do I work out ink cost per square inch?

Print a known area — a full sheet is easiest — and measure the ink used by weight or from the printer’s counters, then divide. Do it with the white underbase included, because white is usually the largest consumer and any estimate that omits it will be badly low.

Why do gang sheets work out cheaper per transfer?

Because print and cure time is charged per sheet, not per design. Fitting twelve small transfers on one sheet spreads that time twelve ways, and artwork prep is charged once for the whole layout. The consumables still scale with area, so the saving is in machine time and labour rather than materials.
