Candle costing goes wrong in two predictable places: fragrance, which is usually the most expensive ingredient per ounce and is easy to under-count at a 10% load, and the batch time — melting, mixing, pouring and cleaning down happens once whether you pour six candles or sixty.

The formula
- Wax and fragrance = per-candle cost ÷ (1 − that line’s waste %), times the batch
- Batch setup is charged once and spread across the batch size
- Failure allowance = (materials + pour labour) ÷ (1 − failure %) − those costs
- Price = (cost per candle + fixed fee ÷ batch) ÷ (1 − target margin − fee %)
What to watch for
- Fragrance is usually the most expensive ingredient per ounce. At a 10% load an 8oz candle carries 0.8oz of oil, which at typical prices exceeds the wax.
- Batch setup and cleanup happen once regardless of batch size, which is exactly why pouring twelve is so much cheaper per candle than pouring three.
- Wax waste is real: residue in the pouring pitcher and melt losses commonly run 5–8% and never reach a vessel.
- A safety warning label is a legal requirement in most markets. It costs pennies but it is a genuine per-unit cost and should not be omitted.
Common mistakes
- Costing fragrance at the bottle price rather than at the load actually used.
- Charging batch setup per candle, which makes small batches look impossible and large ones look free.
- Ignoring cure failures — sink holes, frosting and wet spots are normal, not exceptional.
- Forgetting the vessel is often the single largest material cost.

Work up from the batch. An 8oz soy candle with a $2.60 vessel, wax, fragrance at a 10% load, wick, label, packaging and a fair share of pour and cleanup time typically costs $9 to $12 to produce. At a 40% margin that lands well above the $15 many makers charge, which is why candle businesses so often feel busy but thin.
How do I calculate fragrance cost per candle?
Multiply the candle’s wax weight by your fragrance load to get the oil weight, then multiply by your oil cost per ounce. An 8oz candle at a 10% load uses 0.8oz; at $2 an ounce that is $1.60 — usually more than the wax and frequently under-counted.
What batch size should I use?
Whatever you genuinely pour in one session. Setup and cleanup are charged once and spread across the batch, so entering an aspirational batch size understates your cost. If you usually pour twelve, enter twelve, even if you occasionally do sixty.
What failure rate is realistic for candles?
Three to eight percent once sink holes, frosting, wet spots, poor scent throw and tunnelling are counted, and higher while you are still dialling in a new fragrance or vessel. It is charged against materials and pour labour together, because a rejected candle consumes both.
